Junk Pile Junkie

Part of being a Bicycle junkie means inattentive driving.  Yup, a bike can lurk behind anything waiting to be discovered.  While driving around, I find an enhanced sense for rusting cromoly tubing.  Coming back from a work errand my eye caught a silhouette off in a field.  It was a bicycle.  After turning around, I found myself looking at an odd sight.  The edge off the side road was lined with old junk.  Vacuums, lamps, boat trailers, filing cabinets, and bikes.  Three of them.  I jumped out and began inspecting them.  A nearly useless rusted out huffy, a free spirit 10 speed in rather nasty shape, and a Rollfast three speed.
Thr Rollfast (rear wheel was shredded) after some polishing

This odd Jawa scene from Star Wars was placed in front of an decrepit farm.  The apparent owner came out of the house and approached during my inspection.  A few words later and the farmer explained that he had more bikes in a pile behind the barn. The top two bikes kept my expectations low, it looked like more destroyed rust victims.  My eye caught a few baskets though, and some shiny fenders, so I decided to dig and maybe salvage some parts.  After flipping out a few broken frames, the bikes started getting better.  A girls Schwinn varsity, mud covered and rusty, a Schwinn Hollywood, with more mud and grass growing from the tire splits, a huffy sportsman, with the shiny fenders and rack.  He told me he would take $5 for the Rollfast out front, and $5 for whole pile just to be rid of it.  I obliged, loading my truck to capacity.
Later in the Ant cave...
Several steel wool pads later, the pile was a treasure.  The Schwinn Hollywood was nearly perfect.  The Varsity was almost as nice, but the handlebar was bent on the left side.  The Huffy 3 speed was in the best shape of the lot.  After washing the mud away, and polishing the chrome, all that was need was a spoke for the rear wheel.

Hollywood, as found, only cleaned and polished.

The varsity after a bath and some polishing.

Huffy Sportsman after wash and polish, other than missing cable clips, near perfect. (for a huffy)

Not bad for $10.  Following posts will detail some of the work done on these as well as other finds and projects.  The Ant cave was just beginning to show signs of sprouting bicycle interest.
